I recently had the pleasure of having Ben from Mellow – a specialist online store for CBD products, on my IGTV channel.

Mellow are a dedicated and experienced online store that prides itself in finding and selling safe, effective and quality CBD products to customers in the UK and beyond.

Their whole brand ethos is to help and educate the public on the use of CBD and to banish the taboo that surrounds it.

Every single brand you find on Mellow has been specifically picked for the credibility, trustworthiness and traceability of every product. This is really all we can ask for as a consumer!

Being an experienced Pilates teacher and business owner, I get a lot of questions from my clients and subscribers surrounding the use of CBD oil. Many women love the thought of CBD helping symptoms of menopause, stress, aches and pain etc but have no idea where or when to start.

A day before this chat with Ben I did a Q&A on my Instagram stories. Some of the questions asked were:

  • Do you think there is enough trustworthy information about CBD products available online?
  • Would you know where to find safe and regulated CBD products?
  • Would you take CBD to help with menopause symptoms?

Overall, a lot felt they didn’t know where to find trustworthy information, or where or how to begin buying products but would really love to give it a try.

Ben, let’s start from the beginning, what is CBD and are there different types?

Firstly, I would like to clarify that CBD is not marijuana. The main psychoactive compound that you find in cannabis is THC which means it can get you high, this is not found in CBD, it’s completely different from cannabinoids.

CBD is short for cannabis oil and it has a number of reported benefits and people take it for many different reasons.

There are 3 different types of CBD:

  • Full-spectrum CBD oil means there is a wide range of cannabinoids, essential oils, terpenes and it also contains a very small trace of THC. The THC in full spectrum is not strong enough to get you high.
  • Broad-spectrum is very similar to full-spectrum but it does not contain any THC.
  • CBD Isolate is the purest form of CBD at 99% active compounds and other phytocannabinoid’s removed. This form does not contain THC.

What do you recommend for someone who would like to start using CBD oil?

I think broad-spectrum is a great place to start. There is absolutely no THC and has lots of great benefits for people suffering from joint aches and pains to anxiety and stress.

What is the best way of taking CBD oil and what are the benefits?

We have lots of advice on our website on how to dose properly, this is great for beginners. I would suggest starting at 30-40mg and increasing over time if that’s what feels right for your body.

The most effective way to take CBD is oil is to place a couple of drops UNDER your tongue and holding it there for 30-60 seconds. This will then be absorbed directly into your bloodstream.

Another great way is taking patches, you wear them on your arm and it’ll give you a slow release throughout the whole day.

CBD is reported to have a wide range of health benefits such as effective pain relief. People suffering from osteoporosis, symptoms of back pain, joint pain and inflammation have reported that CBD can reduce pain and help symptoms become more manageable.

CBD is also a great supplement for runners and other athletic people as it reduces inflammation. A really great product we have in store called Four Five Thermal Joint Gel is made with other botanicals such as ashwagandha and essential oils, this great product can be applied topically to help reduce symptoms while giving a soothing warming/cooling sensation. This was originally made for the active as it has powerful anti-inflammatory effects.

CBD can also help manage anxiety and stress and it can take a while to build up in our body, which is why for optimum results we recommend you take it every day, just like you would with other vitamins and supplements.

This is because as it builds up, it interacts with the endogenous cannabinoid system – an important physiologic system involved in establishing and maintaining human health. Those endocannabinoids and their receptors are found throughout the entire body.

Perimenopause and Menopause can come with a wide range of symptoms, would CBD be beneficial to women who are going through this?

Absolutely. Women can suffer from a number of different symptoms, from sleep, anxiety, fatigue, muscle aches and pains, the list really doesn’t end.

We actually have a range on our site specifically formulated for women with menopause but regular CBD oil is a great symptom reliever too!

Like we mentioned before, patches are great and are great for women going through menopause as the patch will give you a slow release throughout the whole day and it goes straight into the bloodstream. Some CBD products will also contain turmeric oil. Turmeric oil is a natural inflammatory and antioxidant and can help with menopause symptoms such as hot flashes and joint pain.

So yes, this is is great for women with menopause but it is important to do your research and if you are going to try CBD, begin with a small dose and work your way up.

It can be trial and error, but that’s how you find out what is right for you, even beginning with gummies that taste like sweets, is a great start!
