The Story

I have been teaching Pilates & strength training for over 16 years.  I qualified in 2009 from Body Control Pilates, completing my training across classical mat, Reformer, Cadillac, bone health, back health, pre & postnatal, small Pilates props, barre & TRX.  Now in my late 40s I feel fitter, stronger and healthier than ever and look to bring all of my knowledge and training to my classes both in the studio & online.

LIFTING WEIGHTS….is not all about the load! 🔥

Maybe a little controversial (!) but we can all look to add weight for progressive overload…..but if the lift is generated from momentum rather than control…..it’s going to take twice as long to see the benefits & results?!

Slowing things down takes a lot more work and feels twice as hard. Speed is not always the answer. You may even find you can’t lift as much! Give it a try and let me know.

SHOULDER IMPINGEMENT….or pain when lifting.

BOTH can be uncomfortable and cause tightness across the chest and into the arm & neck. Positioning the scapula correctly in a neutral alignment, can be a real game changer. Here are my top tips

1. Connect the shoulder blades onto the ribs with a gentle connection down the back, specifically activating the serratus and lats.
2. Rotate the upper arm into the mid point of full rotation to allow the shoulders to open and the ball and socket to sit in neutral
3. Avoid the shoulder and arm lifting up towards the ears, rolling & protract forward. This takes the shoulder out of alignment.
4. When lifting, stabilise the scapular before movement. If you cannot raise the arm without lifting the shoulder blade up or using momentum, it’s time to reduce the weight!
5. Start lighter and build strength before lifting more KGs.

Working out with good alignment and connection really can make all the difference. Join me in a class for more in depth cueing and better movement patterns.
