A heatwave is great when you are sat by the pool with a cool drink… not so much when you are trying to fit in some quality, effective workouts. A heatwave does not have to interfere with your fitness regime though. Have a read of some of tips to make sure you are ready to workout in a heatwave and can smash your workouts whatever the weather…

DON’T leave it too late

The early bird catches the worm has never been more prevalent in this weather. Working out first thing in the morning is often cooler than sunset. Getting up early and getting it done can set you up for the day leaving you feeling energized and pleased with your workout. The later you leave it the more likely you are to put it off, not to mention working out in the heat of the day can leave you feeling zapped of energy and generally lethargic. Building a solid morning routine can really help set you up for a successful day ahead.

DO not worry about your PB

It is really important in this weather to know your limits and learn when to take a break. It is not sensible to head out in the heat of the day for a run and expect record breaking times. The hot weather can affect your workout and your performance. Take it slow, go at your own pace and do what you can. If you are feeling lightheaded or dizzy slow everything down, reduce the intensity and take regular breaks.

DON’T forget your water bottle!

Hydration is absolutely key here. It is important to hydrate before, during and after your workout. Letting your body get to the point where it becomes dehydrated can be very dangerous and leave you feeling unwell. In the hot, summer months we should be aiming for up to 3 litres of water per day. Electrolytes are also a great way to keep hydrated and give you an extra energy boost.

DO switch it up

Switching up your workouts is so important when it is a scorching day. Opt for short, interval circuits over long, grueling runs. This will allow your body to rest and keep your body temperature under control.

DON’T forget your suncream

This is so important! Your skin needs looking after more than ever in the sunshine. It is essential to wear SPF during your workouts to ensure your skin is protected and does not burn.

DO pick your outfit wisely

This is another really important trick. The best thing about working out from home is you can wear what you want! Wear clothes that allow you to breathe and feel comfortable. Avoid baggy t – shirts and cotton as they will stick to you when you sweat.
